Joann's Closing

We have been hearing one comment over and over in the shop... "I need to find a new place now that Joann's is closing" At A Little Knitty we have always stood by our mission of bringing the best quality yarns at the best possible prices. We FULLY understand that even with that mission, we cannot meet the pricing that Joann's was able to do for their private label yarn (Big Twist), Lion's Brand, Bernat and Red Heart plus steep discounts and coupons. We know that these yarns enabled crocheters to crochet huge blankets without breaking the bank and crafters of all sorts to make things for donation without taking out a second mortgage.  We do not have coupons or sales, because we stand by the fact that we give you the best possible pricing every single day we are open...but this means that since we don't mark up, we don't have the margin to mark down.  I know we will not be able to fill the hole in the market that Joann's has left behind, but if there is a...

Kris' Corner - What Inspires You?

Spring is coming and all of a sudden I’m hearing more and more birds singing and noticing some of my plants coming back to life, like the ferns along my front path.  I’m starting to think about brighter Spring colors of yarn replacing the cooler tones of Winter and anxiously waiting for Jen’s new Spring/Summer yarns to come in so I can start a new project.  I was about to write this article when I stopped and realized how important inspiration is to me in the fiber world.  I think it’s probably pretty important to you as well. I’m hoping that by sharing some of my “creative encounters” you too will be motivated to explore different avenues. Have you recently gone to a fiber festival, like the recent Red Alder , in Tacoma or visited one of ALK’s trunk shows or participated in a yarn crawl or even just gone to a Sit N Stitch?  These are wonderful places to see new projects, discover new colors and meet fellow crafters who also share a love for yarn and working with you...

Viking Knitting Bracelet

Come learn the age-old technique of Viking knitting and walk away with your own finished stitch marker charm bracelet. Viking knitting is done by looping wire around a dowel and then pulling the wire tube created through a draw plate to condense the tube down to the desired thinness. The finished piece resembles the look of knitting. In this class we will explore a brief history of the craft, the tools needed, and the many possibilities of creating beautiful jewelry with this fun technique. Then we will get down to business making a single knit bracelet with one stitch marker charm. You will be able to add more of your favorite stitch markers or you can purchase a few from the shop that will match your new bracelet. Level of student experience required: none If you are going on the Alaska Cruise this summer, this is a GREAT class to take now!!! As we visit yarn shops during the cruise, you will be able to collect free charms (that happen to be stitch markers) to add to your charm brace...

Free Pattern Alert - Wee Lima

Yesterday I put up 4 button options on Facebook and Instagram and asked what button you would pick. Engagement on social media hasn't been great, so when I picked my phone up later...I was surprised to see so many people weighing in. It was cool to see how many different opinions there were. I had my favorite, and then I had the one that I felt would look best as a sample (because that is the point of this sweater). Many of you agreed that C was the best option...and I agree as well (although, I'll admit, A was my favorite if I were making this for me!!).  This is the Wee Lima sweater by Taiga Hilliard...a free pattern on Ravelry. I did the 3-6 month size, but is sized from Newborn to 12 months. This pattern is super fun to knit and makes a really adorable gift! I knit it with my SUPER FAVORITE, CAN'T STOP TALKING ABOUT IT Mystical Marl. It took 2 balls for the 3-6 month size. I absolutely LOVE the way this yarn feels in my hand as I knit, it steam blocked very nicely...w...

Hilde's Corner - Happy Lunar New Year!

Happy Lunar New Year! It’s the Year of the Snake! I came across these super cute socks called Year of the Snake Socks by Marie Elyse-Dugal selling for about $3.64 on Ravelry. I just LOVE the cable swirls all up the entire sock. Cascade Heritage would be perfect for these socks with their solid/tonal colors. One needs those beautiful cables to be seen. Wearing these socks may give you good luck all year! And just around the corner is Valentine’s day, and besides hearts, I think of chocolate. (I do love my chocolate) I saw this pattern for Chocolate Swirl mittens and think they are so cute. (Swirls must be on my mind…) They are by Janet Welsh Knits and sell for about $3.64 on Ravelry. They also use fingering weight yarn, so Cascade Heritage would work nice here, too, but if you were going for a different color other than chocolate, I think a variegated yarn would also work, so Square Peg yarns would be fun, or Malabrigo Ultimate Sock . I sure could’ve used a pair of mittens like this,...
