Hilde's Corner - Free Pattern Alert

I am super excited about a couple of projects I am doing or will be doing soon! I can’t wait to show you what I’ve been working on. We brought into the shop a gradient yarn called Echoes by Gusto Wool. It is a sock yarn split into two 50g skeins so you can get matching gradient socks. But of course I wondered what else could you do with this yarn besides socks (though I do love handknit socks!) After much searching I finally landed on Faded Glass Infinity Cowl by Sydney Gerzymisch and it’s a free pattern!  I am so pleased with how well this yarn is working for this cowl. The colors pop and it really seems like stained glass. The gradient blends perfectly from one color to another. The knit might be a bit tedious but honestly, it was the color changes that kept me going. My cowl used only one of the 50g skeins and I paired it with Cascade Heritage sock for the black contrast.  But I have another 50g skein left of the Echoes to try something else. (I am thinking of the Alaska hat since

Kris' Corner - Quick Little Knits

My niece just had a baby and I am so excited about it! I’m almost as excited as I get when Jen has new yarn arrive in the shop. New colors, new fiber combinations, new “squish” feel…ahhhhh! My latest love is Honey by Ella Rae . Its an easy-care soft vegan yarn that is 100% acrylic. This is an absolute perfect baby clothes/blanket yarn. I’m especially excited that she ordered a variety of colors, 16 that is!! So you can go pastels or brights or any combination you want. Here are a few patterns I’m looking at for the new baby boy and his big 5 year old sister. I think I will make them both a sweater. First up is “Isla” by Ursula McGrath available on Ravelry. This pattern features Honey yarn and is a super cute colorful striped pullover. Maia, my niece’s daughter, loves bright colors and the soft yarn will feel good! Another pattern that features Honey is “Demi”, also by Ursula McGrath . It has a crew neck and solid front and back with striped sleeves. Another sweet knit for little girl

Why blocking your swatch matters

I will admit, I have not always been a loyal gauge swatcher....when I was new to knitting, it felt like FOREVER to knit a gauge swatch....so I just knit a little, measured my gauge, and continued on OR made something that was the wrong size and gave it to someone who was that size. Most of the time my gauge was close (or I was lucky) and I had this cocky attitude that I didn't need to gauge swatch. But the thing I did NOT take into consideration was that I was primarily knitting with acrylic yarn. The one amazing thing about acrylic is that it bounces back to where it is placed. This means if you knit it, wash it and block it pretty aggressively....it will bounce back to where it was knit. This means that you really can rely on that little bit of hat you have knit to tell you how big it will be when you are finished. The problem that we all encounter is when we use a natural fiber and we don't take into account how this fiber reacts when it gets wet or when it is blocked. THAT
