Recently I was checking out a cowl that Hilde knit and as soon as I touched the yarn I asked "WHAT IS THAT???" it was silky and smooth and of course it was Malabrigo! The Stockings Were Hung Thanksgiving is behind us and I’m in Christmas decorating mode. I drag my Christmas decoration boxes out from storage and begin the process of unpacking my Christmas keepsakes. I quickly realize that my Christmas stockings make me smile the most. I guess that’s because I have actually made quite a few so they are sentimental. Some go way back to my needlepoint phase and the more recent ones I have knit. Even my childhood stocking is special to me because it was knit by a dear friend of my parents when I was little. I have often thought about trying to replicate it. It’s too late for my two grown boys but maybe for grandchildren one day. Last year I knit this blue and white Nordic patterned sock. The simple classic style makes it one of my favorites.   Since I have been under the weather lately, my brain hasn't been able to knit anything too difficult...so I knit up some of these adorable Mug Huggers as Holiday gifts. I am so excited to announce a project that is VERY close to my heart!  A Little Backstory Before I opened the yarn shop, I had already created A Little Knitty as a business selling newborn hats at markets and online. When I decided to open the shop, I was faced with the decision to keep the name, logo, and social media that I had spent years growing or start over. Part of me very much wanted to start over with the name Square Peg Yarns. But in the end, I stayed with A Little Knitty because it just made more sense time and money-wise. However, I ALWAYS wanted to create a yarn line and name it Square Peg Yarns. Why Square Peg?  Well, the grandmother that taught me to knit was named Peggy, and I have always felt like a square peg in a round hole (not in a bad way, just that my superpower was being a little different and harnessing that!) The Incredible Bulk: Discovering The Joys of Bulky Weight Yarn I feel like I need to begin this column by apologizing for the corny title….my husband’s sense of humor got the best of me. Enough silliness. Recently I have started interspersing my worsted or fingering yarn projects with patterns calling for Bulky or Super Bulky yarn and I’m actually surprising myself and enjoying the change. Somehow my fingers like the different feel, hold and pressure of the yarn and the large needles needed to corral these large fuzzy skeins. The projects knit up quickly…nice in this season of gift making and have a different look and beauty than my other projects that use much smaller needles and definitely more time to complete. I felt a little awkward trying to maneuver needles as large as Size 11, at first, but I am starting to find my groove.
