Kris' Corner - Temperature Blankets

The holidays are over and here we are in cold January and it’s the beginning of a New Year and so I have started to knit a temperature blanket.

A what!?

Some of you know exactly what it is but others, like me 3 months ago, have no idea what this is.  Basically you knit or crochet one row for each day of the year based on the high temperature of the day.  Yarn colors are assigned to different ranges of temperatures.  For example, I chose navy blue for every day that the high temperature lands in the 40-49 degree range and grey for the 50-59 degree range.  So far I only have 2 grey stripes and the rest is navy.  I’m excited to have a day with a high in the 30s so I can use a third color.  As you go through the year you end up with some interesting colored stripes and a beautiful keepsake for the year.

There are many patterns and variations to commemorate a particular year.  My co-worker, Elena, recently made one for her first year of marriage.  Many of you have come into the shop and bought yarn to start a temperature scarf or blanket and its been really fun to hear your ideas and see the yarn you pick out.  Here are a few patterns I found on Ravelry that have the “temperature theme”.

“Temperature Blanket” by Cat Montgomery is a fun knitting pattern that is free.  The pattern includes instructions for a flat or circular scarf as well as the blanket in case you want a smaller project.  This would be a fun blanket to make in Uptown Worsted or Cotton Supreme yarn.

A great crochet pattern is “Moss Square Temperature Blanket” by Kylee Keller.  Each square represents one month with different colored stripes for each days temp.  This is crocheted in worsted weight yarn and would also be perfect for Uptown Worsted or Cotton Supreme.  This pattern is free on Ravelry.

If you are interested in making a temperature cowl check out “Hilo Temperature Cowl” by Victoria Myers.  This knit pattern calls for sport weight yarn.  A good choice would be

Marvel by Yarnalia.  Myers pattern is really fun and would be fun with lots of colors. This pattern is $4.95 on Ravelry.

Karen Chemo Cap 5th Anniversary Makeover

I had someone ask me about the Karen Chemo Cap Fan Stitch and I decided the video and pattern were both in need of a make-over! Especially when I noticed this year is the 5th anniversary of publishing this pattern. When my mom had chemo I made her a few different hats because honestly it felt like the only thing I could do. I designed this one just for her, and was super excited when it was her favorite! After she passed I wasn't sure I wanted to release the design, but with a little time...it felt like the right thing to do! You can download the pattern for free here (please give it a favorite over on Ravelry so that it gets a little Ravelry love!!!):  Ravelry: Karen Chemo Cap pattern by A Little Knitty Designs You can purchase the yarn we used here:  Cumulus by Juniper Moon Farm (alittleknitty.com) Here is the video if you need help with the fan stitch!

Chemo Caps - Part 2

The Gia Chemo Cap doesn't have the same sort of story behind it as the Karen Cap , but it was developed with Chemo patients in mind! Please share this pattern with anyone who would like to knit a hat for someone in need! You can download your pattern here: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gia-chemo-cap

Copilot Remix

Years ago I found the Copilot Cowl by Dominique Trad on Ravelry  and it had two of my ABSOLUTE favorite things...garter stitch and yarn overs! I cast one on for a trip I was taking and knit it while I was traveling. It was the perfect project to keep my attention, but I didn't need to take the pattern out constantly. After knitting one, I noticed that the length of it was just too long for my liking, I wanted it to be a simple, single-wrap cowl. I reworked it a little bit and it is my go-to when I have a skein of fingering weight yarn (especially if it is a singly-ply!!) Copilot Remix Materials:     1 skein 100g/440 fingering weight yarn (if your skein is a little more or a little less, no problem, I put in weights so you can use up all your yarn and not play yarn chicken!)                      US6/4mm 24" circular knitting needles                      Stitch...
