Random Ballsacks

I have a mini skein obsession. Not just purchasing mini skeins, but also using small bits of 100g skeins, then looking for projects that will use up my leftovers. I kept stuffing all my left over bits (all different weights) in one bag, but as I was knitting the hats from the Knitting the National Parks book, I started thinking about a drawstring bag that could have a pin added to help me keep things organized....and the Random Ballsack was created!! This drawstring bag measures 11" x 16" Pins are 1" wide and say "SOCK" "DK" or "WORSTED" Let's say you love to knit socks...every time you finish a sock, put the leftovers in your Random Ballsack with the Sock Pin. Next time you need a pop of color for your socks, check the random ballsack first!! When the bag fills up...it's time to find an awesome pattern to use up those bits (we have some ideas here: https://www.ravelry.com/bundles/get-scrappy and remember, you can hold sock weight d

Kris' Corner - Lace Knitting

Ever since I knit my Ostinato sweater by Fogbound Knits I’ve been thinking of trying another knitting project with lace. This is saying a lot because I seem to have a love/hate relationship with knitting lace. I absolutely love the way it drapes and looks but hate how hard it has been for me to master. I did learn a few valuable things while tackling my recent project. First of all, lifelines are your best friends when knitting lace. Keeping track of all of the intricate stitches is a nightmare to pull out and keep track of unless you have a lifeline protecting your work. I also learned how to read lace charts and how to incorporate multiple stitch markers to help keep me on track as I try and follow different sections of the pattern. As I have contemplated trying lace again, I recently found this exquisite lace pattern I am considering trying and wanted to share with you. This lovely shawl is called “Inflorescence” by Susanna IC , available on Ravelry. This is a botanical, nature-ins

How I buy yarn

Buying yarn for the shop can be a little stressful (Did I just spend an insane amount of money to buy a collection that no one will think is cool except for me?? Did I buy the right colors??) But it is still one of my favorite parts of my job!!! My ultimate favorite is going to a show like H&H where I can see all the latest and greatest the fiber industry has to offer. As I walked the show today, I noticed that I'm very drawn to smaller yarn companies because I get to talk to the person that is intimately involved with every portion of the process. This is their passion. This is what keeps them up at night. I'm not just purchasing yarn, I'm purchasing a little piece of them (in a sweet way...not an icky way) How a company treats me, supports their product and makes their product really matters to me! I look forward to sharing the new items that will be coming into the shop as they trickle in! I will be sure to share why I picked them and try to introduce the people behi

New in the Shop - Color Catchers and Scales

There are two items that I'm constantly suggesting to customers, but don't carry. Those two items are Color Catchers and Scales.  I use both in my yarn crafting. I love weighing my yarn after a repeat and knowing exactly how many repeats I can do before I run out of yarn. Or after I finish knitting something and can't remember how many skeins I used, I weigh it and if it is 530 grams and the yarn was 100g per skein...that means I would need 6 skeins to knit it again!!! There are so many other times I use a scale too...it is just an amazing tool!!! Color Catchers are awesome at collecting any color that escapes from the yarn when you are wet blocking. Just throw it in with the soak and color will be drawn to the Color Catcher and not depositing back onto other colors in your project! I find it most effective for hand dyed yarns or super high contrast projects!

Helpful Tip - Google Lens

Sometimes you see a sample (or maybe something that someone made) and you don't know the name of the pattern. I have q helpful tip for that!!! From your cell phone, go to google.com On the search bar, click the icon on the far right that looks like a camera (see photo below) Google Lens will launch...take a photo of the sample Search results will show below the photo that you take. If you don't see the result you were hoping for, stand further back and take another photo

Nydia Hat

If you fell in love with my Nydia cardigan, but it's a bit more of a project than you want to take on.... ....this hat might be for you!!!! The Nydia Hat is the same beautiful bamboo stitch as the sweater and cardigan...but it's a quick project that works perfectly as a gauge swatch if you want to do the sweater or cardigan !!! We highly recommend an awesome locally dyed yarn or Wool Pop for this hat!!

Hilde's Corner

I have a really good place to find great knitting/crochet patterns! Recently I was looking through patterns on a site and I was astonished that each pattern I looked at was one I wanted to knit. “Wow - there are so many good patterns here” I said to myself. “That one’s good, this one’s good,... oo… here’s another! Wow!! So many!” Then I realized I was looking at my “Favorites” folder. As foolish as that realization made me feel, it also hit home a point. How often do we actually look at the patterns we “Favorite”? Clearly, I rarely, if ever, do. And there are some great patterns there! Curated especially for you, BY you. So, take a moment and look at that place where you favorite or bookmark patterns. I’m betting you have forgotten many of the patterns that are there! If this sounds familiar, our Avent Calendar Making Party in July would be a lot of fun. Choose your own items for an advent calendar that you will open in December, and odds are good you won’t remember what you chose for

New in the shop - Blu Fiber Assigned Pooling Yarn

Have you been fascinated by assigned pooling patterns like this one... Float by Dawn Barker Assigned Pooling occurs when a change in stitch and texture is assigned to changes in color within a skein of variegated yarn. In this case, simple Stockinette Stitch is assigned to the main color to create a backdrop for the cluster stitch assigned to the accent color. Blu Fiber has dyed up 4 colorways on his 80% Superwash Merino, 20% Cashmere base and it's SOOO soft and squishy and gorgeous!!!! Hurry, I know they won't last long! You can find these in-store or online HERE

No more Hat Not Hate

I'm sorry to announce that the Hat Not Hate hat drive has ended. I really, REALLY loved this charity, but I'm guessing it just became a bit too large to manage and they are no longer collecting hats and have instructed us to discontinue as well...HOWEVER...I can't be stopped! ;) We will pivot to accepting ALLLLLLL colored hats for children in our community. I will team up with the Auburn Schools Foundation to get them out to the kids. So, if you have an itch to knit a hat this summer for kids in need...we will be a collection point and get them off to kids that need them!!! They can be any size that would fit a child 5-18. Basically, their heads are about the same size as adults, with a little less rise. If you have any questions, email us at info@alittleknitty.com Thanks!!!
