Loose Ends Project

This has been shared with me a few times and I think it's such a cool project!! The idea for Loose Ends came about when the founders, Jennifer Simonic and Masey Kaplan, both avid knitters, realized that they had a shared experience: Friends would often ask them to finish blankets, sweaters, or other projects left undone by deceased loved ones. They always do so enthusiastically, understanding what it feels like to wear something a loved one has made.  You can apply to have a project finished or your can apply to be a finisher!!!  Https://www.looseendsproject.org/

New yarn CashSilk Light

It feels like all I'm chatting about this week is silk (not a bad problem to have!!!) This yarn I have been PATIENTLY waiting for since the summer!!! I instantly fell in love with this 70% Merino Wool, 20% Silk, 10% Cashmere yarn as soon as I touched it! It had the warmth and fluff of mohair, without the prickly-ness and allergy issues (I keep chatting with people who discover mohair hates them too....I feel like we need a club or a secret handshake!!!!) Anywho....this yarn needs to be touched to really see how amazing it is!! I refer to yarns like this as "Faux-Mo" because it's an excellent mohair alternative. Substitute it anywhere mohair is used in a pattern, or add it to a strand of fingering weight yarn to make a fluffy hat...the options are endless!!! We have this free pattern available in the shop (as seen in the photo above). When you purchase the yarn in-store or online, let us know if you would like us to include the pattern. The yarn is SOOOOOOOO new that t

We have a sample hat in the shop and it's just lovely! If you are looking for a DK-weight yarn with sheen and drape...this one is for you!!! You can find Silky Merino in-store or online HERE

Hilde's Corner - Tiny Knits

Sometimes knitting clothes and wearable accessories gets a bit old, and when that happens to me, I love knitting soft stuffed animals. They are usually quick to knit up,  fun to watch take shape, and I love their floppy cuteness. With the holidays coming, stuffed toys might be just what you need!   I found these super easy animal toys when I needed a quick gift earlier this summer. They have no arms or legs – they're just formed by big stitches. I think little hands would love handling them since there are no floppy arms or legs to get in the way.  They are called Forest Friend Dolls by Esther Braithwaite . Esther has many other patterns all with the same idea – people dolls, animals, snowmen, and even mini versions. Some of her patterns are free (like the mini gingerbread friends or Izzy Teddy bear dolls ) but the Forest Friends goes for about $5 on Ravelry. Forest Friends pattern asks for DK weight yarn, but with stuffies its nice because you can use any yarn, just making sure t

Hilde's Corner - The Snow!

The snow! The snow!! I love snow! Having been brought up in Minnesota, one of the things I miss most is the snow. Granted the snow here is wetter and conditions icier than Minnesota, but it's still beautiful!   It reminded me of this gorgeous hat I have always wanted to knit. Norrland by Sara Huntington Burch is $7 on Ravelry. A beautiful snowy forest scene on a hat done with stranding and cables! It's stunning. It's knit with fingering weight yarn, so there are lots of options in the shop. Heritage by Cascade Yarns would be wonderful as would the yarn Variations .     Though I have not knit this hat, I have knit another of Sara's patterns. Charadriiformes is a stranded cowl with many different shorebirds knit into it. (Hence the impossible name – it's the scientific name for the order of shorebirds. Ya – it's a mouthful!) She (and I!) used Malabrigo Silky Merino for this and Jen just brought this yarn into the shop! It's a favorite of mine. Silk and merino

Introducing Silky Merino by Malabrigo

Recently I was checking out a cowl that Hilde knit and as soon as I touched the yarn I asked "WHAT IS THAT???" it was silky and smooth and of course it was Malabrigo! Within 10 minutes I had loaded my shopping cart and was adding a new line to what we carry from Malabrigo! Curious on what you can make with this yarn? Check out the Ravelry project page with over 27 thousand project ideas !!!! What will you make first? You can find this yarn in-store or online HERE Silky Merino This delightfully drapery favorite combines 50% silk and 50% merino into a single-ply DK yarn that is absolutely a treat to knit and a joy to wear. The combination is soft, smooth, and itch-free even on the most sensitive skin- absolutely wonderful for garments, scarves, and other next-to-your-skin items. The silk content gives the yarn a bit more weight and drape than a pure merino, and a slight sheen that is absolutely gorgeous. The fibers take dye a little differently, adding extra depth to the wide s

Kris' Corner - The Stockings Were Hung

The Stockings Were Hung Thanksgiving is behind us and I’m in Christmas decorating mode. I drag my Christmas decoration boxes out from storage and begin the process of unpacking my Christmas keepsakes. I quickly realize that my Christmas stockings make me smile the most. I guess that’s because I have actually made quite a few so they are sentimental. Some go way back to my needlepoint phase and the more recent ones I have knit. Even my childhood stocking is special to me because it was knit by a dear friend of my parents when I was little. I have often thought about trying to replicate it. It’s too late for my two grown boys but maybe for grandchildren one day. Last year I knit this blue and white Nordic patterned sock. The simple classic style makes it one of my favorites. It’s called, “ Modern Classics Christmas Stockings” by Nina Isaacson and is available on Ravelry. I chose the blue and white combination but the pattern suggests other colors, like red and white, that are just as be

Mug Hugger Pattern & Video

Since I have been under the weather lately, my brain hasn't been able to knit anything too difficult...so I knit up some of these adorable Mug Huggers as Holiday gifts. After I made a dozen or so, I decided I should write out the pattern! The free pattern can be found HERE and there is a link to the video below! Soon we will have kits in-store...but for now you can find all of our Uptown Worsted inventory HERE

Introducing Square Peg Yarns

I am so excited to announce a project that is VERY close to my heart!  A Little Backstory Before I opened the yarn shop, I had already created A Little Knitty as a business selling newborn hats at markets and online. When I decided to open the shop, I was faced with the decision to keep the name, logo, and social media that I had spent years growing or start over. Part of me very much wanted to start over with the name Square Peg Yarns. But in the end, I stayed with A Little Knitty because it just made more sense time and money-wise. However, I ALWAYS wanted to create a yarn line and name it Square Peg Yarns. Why Square Peg?  Well, the grandmother that taught me to knit was named Peggy, and I have always felt like a square peg in a round hole (not in a bad way, just that my superpower was being a little different and harnessing that!) There are times when we all feel this way. We are thrown into a new environment or move to a new place and feel like we don't quite fit in or belong.

Kris' Corner - The Incredible Bulk

The Incredible Bulk: Discovering The Joys of Bulky Weight Yarn I feel like I need to begin this column by apologizing for the corny title….my husband’s sense of humor got the best of me. Enough silliness. Recently I have started interspersing my worsted or fingering yarn projects with patterns calling for Bulky or Super Bulky yarn and I’m actually surprising myself and enjoying the change. Somehow my fingers like the different feel, hold and pressure of the yarn and the large needles needed to corral these large fuzzy skeins. The projects knit up quickly…nice in this season of gift making and have a different look and beauty than my other projects that use much smaller needles and definitely more time to complete. I felt a little awkward trying to maneuver needles as large as Size 11, at first, but I am starting to find my groove. I’m highlighting two patterns here that are beautiful and are so satisfying to complete: First up are these fingerless mitts. I knit them last winter and pul

Dream Knitting - Killer Queen Cowl

The other day I was scrolling Instagram and this pattern photo stopped me in my tracks. I don't think I have ever purchased a pattern so fast!! I haven't been able to cast it on yet, but wanted to share it with you in case you needed a little knitting project inspiration! :) And it is designed with Malabrigo Rios and we have lots in stock!!! Get the pattern on Ravelry:  Ravelry: Killer Queen Cowl pattern by Mary Annarella

Hilde's Corner - Socks

My daughter and I were looking at sock patterns the other day and found some really cute holiday socks. I just adore these Scandinavian socks in the colors the designer chose for her model. The pattern is called Catch a Falling Star by Sofia Capelle . That heel is amazing! The pattern about $6.70 on Ravelry. I think Cascade Yarns Heritage would be so nice for this – it's so soft. The other sock we found was a Christmas sock called Gretel Christmas Motif Knitted socks by Winwick Mum and it's free on Ravelry! I think using lovely mini skeins would work for this. Rainier Roses has quite a few colors to choose from here in the shop. I think it's time for a mother/daughter mini KAL! With socks!

New Books & Restocks

I posted this little teaser the other day on social media...did you guess the books in the stack? With the addition of the Huckleberry Hollow corner full of crochet adorable-ness...we wanted to add some fun crochet books too!  When I fell down the rabbit hole that is amigurumi books, this is the first one I knew I HAD to carry! And this one...how could I not? This book comes highly recommended by SO many people...so that got added to the mix! And I'm pretty sure I need to make all of these And cute little knit creatures are actually hard to come by (crochet just lends so well to these cute little guys) but this book was introduced to me by Kris and I just had to get it! Woolly Wormhead patterns have been a staple of the shop for quite some time...and we are thrilled to now carry this book! I'm a sucker for shawl books.... Just when I was about to hit submit, two more books arrived! Ok...that is IT....ALLLLLLL the books are in-store or online HERE But hurry, books have been SO p
