Hilde's Corner - Christmas in July - This time it’s personal!

Let’s take a moment to remember what the holiday season is like when we are trying to knit or crochet for all our loved ones and there is a deadline to meet, and we might be creating something we are not all that fond of creating. We love doing it, and we love our loved ones, but wouldn’t it be nice to take a moment sometime to create something just for ourselves? Something for the pure joy of it, and something we know the receiver will love because that person is us! We know we’re going to love it! July is about as far away from the holidays as we can get - the perfect time to create a bit selfishly. Actually, I hate to think of it that way - it’s not selfish to make things for ourselves. I think it’s a necessity! A bit of self care, perhaps. I mean, we all need hats, mittens, and sweaters, too! So why not a bit of Christmas in July - this time, let’s make it personal!

So who’s with me? Who wants to do a bit of selfish creating this July? (Let’s start with coming up with a better term than “selfish creating”) What will you work on? What will bring you joy? Granted, no one wants to be working on a big sweater, or heaven forbid, a huge afghan in the hot summer months. But hats, mittens, scarves, and the like will be welcome when the days get cooler.

But here’s an advantage for creating in the summer - we can think of fun summer items to make! I’ve landed on a fun sun hat called Summer Sun Hat by Wannipa Yunker. It sells for $5 on Ravelry. It’s crocheted and they use a rafia paper yarn, but I wanted to try it in Juniper Moon Zooey. I’ve had to adjust a bit because the yarn I’m using is DK and I believe the yarn called for in the pattern is worsted. I’m going to use millinery wire for the brim, hoping it will help stiffen it a bit.

There are lots of cute hats out there… mostly in crochet. How about this fun bucket hat - Trailhead Bucket Hat by I Need It Crochet. It sells for about $5 on Ravelry and I think Cotton Supreme would be perfect for this.

Cotton Supreme would also work for Seaside Sun Hat by Kaitlin Barthold, a $5 pattern on Ravelry.

What about a cute crocheted beach bag? I LOVE this Classic Beach Bag by Rebecca Langford, free on Ravelry. It uses worsted weight cotton, so Cotton Supreme would be ideal for this one, with lots of colors to choose from.

Then there’s this super cute one - Sand Dollar Beach Bag by Merri Purdy and it’s free on Ravelry! I think Juniper Moon Zooey would work for this one, as well as Queensland's Summer Solstice Paints, a slow color change linen .

And if we’re making something for the pure fun of it, how about this free Beach Bunny by Rina Mogryna Art! So cute and ready for summer fun. Ricorumi DK would be perfect for this little cutie.

As I was searching for patterns for this article, I came across this one… Hilda the Beach Hippo! HAHA! My namesake (sort of). This is a knitting pattern by Rebecca Roberts and is about $4.20 on Ravelry. It doesn’t say what weight yarn, but I would use Uptown worsted. Well, I think she’s adorable… how could she not be with a name like that? Hee hee….

What will you gift yourself this Christmas in July? I can’t wait to see what you create. Stop by and show us!!!

Karen Chemo Cap 5th Anniversary Makeover

I had someone ask me about the Karen Chemo Cap Fan Stitch and I decided the video and pattern were both in need of a make-over! Especially when I noticed this year is the 5th anniversary of publishing this pattern. When my mom had chemo I made her a few different hats because honestly it felt like the only thing I could do. I designed this one just for her, and was super excited when it was her favorite! After she passed I wasn't sure I wanted to release the design, but with a little time...it felt like the right thing to do! You can download the pattern for free here (please give it a favorite over on Ravelry so that it gets a little Ravelry love!!!):  Ravelry: Karen Chemo Cap pattern by A Little Knitty Designs You can purchase the yarn we used here:  Cumulus by Juniper Moon Farm (alittleknitty.com) Here is the video if you need help with the fan stitch!

Chemo Caps - Part 2

The Gia Chemo Cap doesn't have the same sort of story behind it as the Karen Cap , but it was developed with Chemo patients in mind! Please share this pattern with anyone who would like to knit a hat for someone in need! You can download your pattern here: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gia-chemo-cap

Copilot Remix

Years ago I found the Copilot Cowl by Dominique Trad on Ravelry  and it had two of my ABSOLUTE favorite things...garter stitch and yarn overs! I cast one on for a trip I was taking and knit it while I was traveling. It was the perfect project to keep my attention, but I didn't need to take the pattern out constantly. After knitting one, I noticed that the length of it was just too long for my liking, I wanted it to be a simple, single-wrap cowl. I reworked it a little bit and it is my go-to when I have a skein of fingering weight yarn (especially if it is a singly-ply!!) Copilot Remix Materials:     1 skein 100g/440 fingering weight yarn (if your skein is a little more or a little less, no problem, I put in weights so you can use up all your yarn and not play yarn chicken!)                      US6/4mm 24" circular knitting needles                      Stitch...
