If you have been using yarn for awhile, you probably know how to use yarn that is put up in a hank...but think back to when you tried to wind your very first hank of yarn. If your story is anything like mine, you made a HUUUUUUUGE mess!!!
So, first of all, why does yarn even come like this?? Shouldn't all yarn just come in a ball? Hand-dyed yarns are dyed in hank form and it's easiest to keep it in that form because hanks travel a LOT better than wound balls. It's also better for storage, as yarn that is wound puts tension on the fiber. This is why most natural fibers will be in hank form and most man-made/processed fibers will be put into a ball. Of course, there is ALWAYS the exception to the rule that just leaves me scratching my head! :)
Before using the yarn, you will need to wind it into a ball. You can do this with a swift & ball winder (we are happy to do this for you, just ask!) or you can do it at home if you have your own swift and ball winder. Other options are to make someone hold it while you wind or put the hank over your knees or around a chair. I find for mini-skeins this is how I wind them up!
I found this video to help demonstrate how to handwind a hank of yarn!
